Really Weird Red Blotches....

Post by Dee »

Woke up on Friday morning and my bottom lip felt a little numb, so I looked in the mirror and it did seem a tad swollen. Then I thought to look at other parts of my body for anything suspicious.
In between my breasts were flat red blotches and I had a few on the top of one leg.
Took some Benadryl Friday night.
Got up yesterday and the previous ones were gone, but there were others on other parts of my body.
Today, the same, some on different areas. This time a couple were raised. Most are just flat red blotches.
I have no clue what these are or what is causing them.
I haven't added or changed anything that I have ingested in the past week.
Going to call my PCP tomorrow morning and see if I can get into her so she can get a look at these ..

Hi Dee,

That does sound suspiciously like an allergic reaction, but kind of tough to pin down, if you haven't changed any meds or anything, lately.

You haven't by any chance changed lotions, soap, detergent, shampoo, or anything else that any of your skin comes in contact with lately, have you? Any new articles of clothing - a new pair of long johns, maybe? I once got a rash from a flannel shirt, and it kept recurring, every time I wore the shirt, even after the shirt was washed several times. I finally threw it away, to solve the problem.

I haven't changed anything and haven't bought anything new as far as clothes.
Nope!! No new longies!!
I don't know why, but in the back of my mind, I still keep thinking thyroid.
What other testing should I ask for besides the recent T3 T4 TSH tests that I have had done.
Geeeeeeeeeeeeeeezzzzzzzz! Leave it to me to get something else that's a stumper....

Well, it's certainly not impossible that the red blotches might be related to hypothyroidism, but I think that if the thyroid is involved, the red blotches are usually associated with hot flashes triggered by hormonal changes related to menopause. Here's a reference for that:

http://www.abcarticledirectory.com/Arti ... roid/84388

I'm not aware of any other thyroid tests that might be helpful. The tests that you had, seemed pretty thorough - as I recall, they even checked for thyroid antibodies.

If you search the net, the most common "hits" blame red blotches on allergic reactions to meds, or shampoos, etc.

The only things that I have added and that was on Nov.2nd was the flax seed oil, and I did up my vitamin D, but that was last month, and added Rite Aid pharmacy's equivalent to Centrum Silver vitamin.
I surely would think that if it was one of the above that this would have showed up sooner than now.
I'm going to stop the flax seed oil, vitamin, calcium, vitamin D for 3 days to see if this goes away.
I just opened a new bottle of my probiotic on Friday morning but there hasn't been any change in their formulation.
I am one of the fortunale ones that hasn't experienced any hot flashes in the last 5 years of going into menopause..
It's probably all of that orneryness :raspberry: coming out of me!!!!!

Thanks for doing some research Tex..
Very much appreciated.
Since there are so many skin conditions something like this is hard to figure out.

Hi Dee,

Are they itchy? If so, I'd guess hives. They can be anywhere on the body. The swollen lip goes along with an allergic reaction too.

Polly

Hi Polly!!!
The flat blotches don't itch, but I noticed today that the few that were raised itched.
I took 50mgs of Benadryl before noon today and the raised ones are down now and the others have lightend in color.
So????? What can my PCP do for these???

Gotta love that humor Tex!!!!!
Cripe, I just showered with plain old Ivory soap!! And yes, they do still make it and sell it!!!
Going to put on jammies that I know haven't been washed in the clothes soap that I've been using for about 2 weeks.
Then, I'll pop another 50mgs. of Benadryl in about an hour.

Becky,
The dose of vitamin C that is in the multi-vitamin was low and rarely do I get much more.
I've heard of people breaking out in hives from taking vitamin C..
If it's hives, I haven't had them since getting them as a child.

Dee,

The first time I got hives was in 1983. We were living in Houston and Hurricane Alicia came through. The eye went right over our house. The electricity went out for 5 days! This was August in Houston. Very hot and very humid. We didn't have the common sense to leave and on top of that my husband's best friend and his wife and child came to visit us from out of town. Well, we thought we would be smart and go to Water World. Guess what? We got sunburned. Talk about hot. No electricity, sunburned, and August in Houston, and with houseguests. The hives started on my torso and grew up until they were beginning to reach my face. I had no idea what they were so I went to my dermatologist. He gave me benadryl and they went away. I guess it was the heat, and stress, and probably the sun.

I hope yours are just hives.

Morning Dee,

I sure hope your PCP can figure this one out. I would have them all over if I used Ivory Soap. Have been allergic to that since I was a wee tot.

Take care and hope you feel better.

Love, Maggie

You know, Maggie, you may be on to something. We can certainly develop new allergies to old, familiar products, for no obvious reason. I used Scope mouthwash every morning, for over a decade, but one morning I noticed that a few seconds after I swished it around in my mouth, my whole mouth was on fire. The next morning, the effect was even worse. I have no idea why that happened, but I haven't touched it since.

Love,
Tex
