Sorry the site was down because of hacking. Either the red notice wasn't there or I missed it.

Joan,

You're seeing that because there have been 267 new messages, and 54 new topics posted in the past 8 days, (since the database backup that I used to restore our membership files was made, IOW).

You're most welcome - sorry that it took so long. I backed up the data that we had left, before I restored that file, and wasted a bunch of time talking with a techie at the ISP, but he didn't have the foggiest idea how to deal with the problem, nor whether or not anyone else's board on that server had been hacked.

Most likely, this happened because some spammer figured out a better way to "register", and it went awry, and the script he tried either accidentally deleted that data, or he figured out a way to do it intentionally, after his registration script failed to pass the filters in the registration process.

Spammers don't register the way that "real" people do - they write computer scripts that automatically bypass the php registration forms, to try to write the necessary registration data straight to the database. That doesn't work on this board, though.

Tex

P S You logged on as soon as I reopened the board - before I had time to post that notice.

Dee,

I was up until almost 3:30 this morning, trying to get caught up on reading posts, so it was indeed kind of a rude awakening this morning when I finally drug, (dragged, for the English teachers in the group, LOL), my sorry butt out of bed and tried to log on. I suppose if I had been wide awake, I wouldn't have wasted a bunch of time trying to repair a corrupt file, when the file wasn't even there, any more.

I'm just glad that they waited until I got back home, because it would have been a lot more difficult to deal with, while I was gone, especially since I couldn't find the time to even log on, some days. Actually, it was pretty considerate of them, in a way, since I had more time to deal with it today, than I would normally have. LOL.

They probably didn't even read any posts, and even if they did, it most likely wouldn't have meant anything to them, anyway.

Love,
Tex

Tex,
I'm glad you had a backup that allowed you to replace the deleted registrations. That minimized the damage considerably. Once again, thank you for the time and effort you expend on our behalf.

I've never understood the mentality of people who create viruses, delete other's files, etc. It's the adolescent mentality, and I guess I had more important things to do as an adolescent.

I try to download a backup once a week. I would do it more often, but I have to shut down the board while making the backup, (to guarantee the integrity of all the files), and the database is getting to be so large that it takes a full hour to do it, and it get larger every week, of course. I would hate to lose a week's worth of data, but that's a lot better than losing a lot more of it, or even all of it.

Thanks for the kind words.
