Warmest wishes for the best year ever - 2009! Has anyone made any resolutions?
I've been away for a few days visiting family in VA. I'll try to go back and see what I missed here on the board.
And now for some exciting news............
"The Vitamin D Council is happy to announce that we have partnered with ZRT Laboratory to provide an inexpensive, $65.00, in-home, accurate, vitamin D [25(OH)D] test. The usual cost for this test is between $100.00 and $200.00.
Our ZRT service is not just inexpensive, it means no more worrying about your doctor ordering the right test or interpreting it correctly. You buy the test kit on the internet or by phone, a few days later the kit comes in the mail, you or a nurse friend do a finger stick, collect a few drops of blood, and send the blotter paper back to ZRT in the postage paid envelope provided with the kit. A week later you get results back in the mail and know accurate 25-hydroxy-vitamin D levels of you and your family."
This is great - another way we can take control of our own health. It's so true that many docs don't know the proper test to order or how to interpret it.
Ring out the old (thank goodness) and ring in the new!!!

Thanks for that information. That's definitely good news. More than that, I'm beginning to believe that direct tests by mail will be the trend, in the future, as people become more and more aware of a need to monitor their own health. Then, when they find evidence of a problem, they'll go to their doctors, with "proof" in hand, for prescriptions, advice, additional tests, etc.

Is this the test one would use to asses the need for Vitamin D3 supplementation? I've bought a supplement and am using it cautiously, having read that its best to assess my levels first.

They have a good discussion of which test is appropriate and why. Plus tons of other stuff. I did get a pretest last year before upping my vitamin D and was surprised how low it was (I'm outside about 3/4 of the year gardening, jogging, etc.).

LOVED the new year's animals! Especially the one in the red Converse all-stars! Your thoughts on mail-in tests are interesting. How will folks know which ones to take advantage of? I can envision a slew of unnecessary tests being offered for way too much $$$. But it sure will be convenient. Happy New Year to you too, my very dear friend.
