Hi,
I've had MC since I was a teenager but not diagnosed until I was almost 40. I spent years on Asacol and I'm doing great. I've been off meds for 3+ years now with almost no problems. I can eat almost anything I want and I can exercise with little problems. My question: Is it possible that I won't ever have problems with MC again?? Is it possible I no longer have MC or is MC a life sentence??

Hi Jeanette,
Welcome to our internet family. I wish I could tell you that you will never have a problem with MC again, but unfortunataly, once the genes are triggered, MC is for life. The good news is that a few people who are fortunate enough to be able to attain spontaneous remission, (spontaneous meaning being able to maintain remission without any maintenance treatment whatsoever), are usually able to enjoy long periods without any active symptoms. MC is somewhat like Crohn's disease, in that every case is different, and it can come and go at virtually any time, for no obvious reason. During periods of remission, intestinal pathology returns to normal, but unfortunately, there is no known "cure". Spontaneous remission can sometimes last for many years, though, so it's certainly not impossible that you might never have another "flare".
Please keep us posted - we love to hear success stories.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
hi jeanette
I would have to agree with tex...i guess we could have remission at some time but that is not to say that we wont have future relapses...I think by planning a good healthy diet will almost prevent mc becoming at its worst...If i went into remission i would still remain on a gf diet im afraid...even though i would be tempted to eat gluten again...Guess i just wouldnt want to take the risk.
