Went to GI Big specialist today, having procdure!

Post by windsey728 »

Ok, well my regular GI doctor referred me to see a special GI doctor at the big hospital Baylor at Dallas. The doctor suspects I may have something going on with my pancreas or ducts so I need to have another scope with a sono????Something like that? I just had a edg/colonscopy in March but I need to have this special scope done as well. I was experiencing alot of upper abdominal pain and this pancretitis (sp?) is common in people with Sjogrens....Has anyone had this done and did anyone experinence any discomfort after the procedure that was different than a regular edg? Yall forgive me...I am not the best speller in the world and sometimes I dont use proper grammer so just bare with me....LOL! Thanks!

Lindsey,

Actually, pancreatitis symptoms are not all that unusual with MC. MC can affect a lot of organs in the body, and often does. We have at least one member, who's GI doc insisted that if she didn't subject herself to a very invasive test, (that included a risk of damaging her pancreas during the test), she would be likely to suffer all sorts of dire consequences. She declined the test anyway, and sure enough, as soon as she got her MC symptoms under control, all her pancreas issues disappeared, also. That was several years ago. She is still symptom free, and running marathons, now.

Be aware that for some patients, Asacol can cause pancreatitis, and in those cases, just stopping the use of the Asacol will usually resolve the pancreatitis symptoms.

Your doctor may not be aware of this connection:

http://www.annals.org/cgi/content/abstract/110/6/490

http://www.medhelp.org/posts/Gastroente ... how/885240

If you google the keywords, "pancreatitis asacol", you will see that pancreatitis is listed as an adverse side effect for Asacol, on most sites that describe the use of Asacol. It should be listed on the label that came with your prescription, also, (somewhere in the fine print). Many GI docs do not seem to be aware of this connection, or if they are aware of it, they consider it to be so rare as to not be worth considering. Most GI docs consider MC to be a rare disease, also, but we all have it, just the same.

We have at least one other member who developed pancreatitis, after taking Asacol.

Don't worry about spelling or grammer - you're doing just fine.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Hi Lindsey,

I had an endoscopic ultrasound to look at cysts on my pancreas and to do a needle biopsy. I can't speak to the safety of the procedure but the experience was similar to an endoscopy....I slept through it. They had found cysts on a CT scan but when they went to do the biopsy they couldn't find them. Anyway, the only difference was they put a small round tube in my mouth so I wouldn't bite through the probe during the procedure. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Love,
Cristi

Thanks Tex for the info! Never knew that Asacol could do that! I will do some investigating!
